The Grandparents

Lucy, a precocious 18-year-old skater girl, sits arms crossed between her father and a suitcase. They are sitting in the living room of an older woman, who introduces herself as Grandma Jean. The woman’s husband sits sternly beside her, an older man with a grey beard whom she calls Grandpa. They study the teen girl, as the father thanks them profusely for taking her in with such short notice. Ever since her mother left, she has been severely out of control: partying, being promiscuous with both men and women and completely disobeying his rules. He didn’t know where else to turn … and his pastor recommended their unique ‘homestyle’ rehabilitation facility. Grandma Jean assures him that they will take good care of her, just as if she were their grandchild. That is their style. She offers to fetch Lucy some cookies which she scoffs at! Her father tries to scold her, but Grandpa cuts him off, politely but sternly suggesting that he leave. He will be allowed monthly visitations and regular phone calls, just as they explained on the phone. The father does as he is told and exits, leaving the startled Lucy alone with Grandpa.

There is a long awkward silence … before Grandma Jean comes back in with the cookies. Lucy suddenly feels very nervous and starts eating while Grandma sweetly explains the rules of the facility. She takes off Lucy’s tomboyish baseball cap as she explains that all troubled girls under their care must respect their ‘personal’ approach to behavior control. Once alone, Lucy turns the light back on and tries to get Amy to kiss her, but Amy is reluctant, out of worry that they will be caught. She tells Lucy that she promised Grandpa she wouldn’t spoil her. Lucy is confused and asks her to explain. Amy confesses that Grandpa comes into her room every night, that’s his rule, and that he warned her not to spoil Lucy before he could … otherwise she won’t be allowed to leave. Lucy can’t believe her ears and gets Amy to tell her EVERYTHING that has happened. An evil grin comes over her face, as she realizes just how fucked up this place is. The reason why there are so few houseguests left is because Grandpa is screwing them all in exchange for early release. That’s why he limits visitations with the parents. That’s why Grandma Jean is so sweet and naïve. She has no clue! Lucy can’t believe her stupid father fell for this scam!

She gives Amy a big kiss. The meek girl shrinks back nervously and asks what they should do. Lucy bravely tells her that they need to get out of this facility … and the only way to do it is for Grandpa to get caught. She asks Amy what the normal routine is, and Amy explains that Grandpa waits until 3am every night before coming in … when Grandma is off in dreamland. ‘Perfect,’ exclaims Lucy, ‘So, if we can make him come into the room sooner and expose him for the pervert he is, Grandma Jean will surely hear us and help us!’ Amy is very reluctant to go against Grandpa, but Lucy convinces her.

She confides in him that she is a good girl, with good parents. She just parties a little too much. If he will just let her go, she promises to go home and not do this again.
